During the week of Nov.7-13, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, five; Puna and South Kohala, two each.
So far this year, there have been 950 DUI arrests compared to 930 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.2 percent.
There have been 1,227 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,337 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 28 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 17 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 64.7 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
